The databases are available through subscription or openly accessible on the web.

The company was founded by linguists who had worked as part of their scientific activities with issues of automated text production and digital archiving.

Social Explorer, Inc.
Social Explorer, Inc. is a software company that launched SocialExplorer.com. Social Explorer was co-founded by Andrew Beveridge and Ahmed Lacevic. The first version of Social Explorer was launched in March 2005 to engage users with demographic data through interactive maps and reports. Through the years the database has been updated with the latest data, interactive tools, and applications.
In April 2019, Social Explorer, Inc. and Oxford University Press mutually agreed to end their partnership. Beginning on April 22, 2019, Social Explorer. Inc. began to provide subscriptions and services to Social Explorer directly with subscribers.
