This database provides access to current content as well as some content of the past two decades for more than 100 full text newspapers in Spanish and Portuguese from across Central and South America, as well as a full range of U.S. Hispanic newspapers. It also contains content from wire services and regional magazines.
Titles come from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the United States. Key titles include El Universal (Mexico City), O Globo (Brazil), La Nación (Argentina), and El Mercurio (Chile). Three business titles are included: El Economista (Mexico), Valor Economico (Brazil), and Portafolio (Colombia). Wire services include Noticias Financieras, InfoAmericas, IPS-Inter Press Service, El Reporte Delta, and Business Wire Latin America.
Ackerman noted (2010) that some of the miscellaneous sources did not have full-run coverage. She indicated that currency of coverage for the major news titles had been addressed since her original review in 2008. But she also observed selective omission of content in some titles as compared to the initial print editions, citing an explanation from ProQuest that redistribution rights vary among the original content sources.
A CRL analysis of the extent of title holdings indicates that while some holdings go back to the early 1990s, the majority of titles began in 2005; current title holdings peaked between 2008 and 2010. See Appendix A for more detailed analysis.
Also, in March 2013 CRL noted the following overlap: all 54 titles from U.S. Hispanic Newsstand are duplicated here; 41 titles from this database are duplicated in ProQuest International Newsstand, and 58 titles are duplicated in ProQuest Newsstand. At the same time, this database includes the original Spanish-language content of such titles such El Comercio, El Tiempo, and La Nación, while the other ProQuest international newsstand products have only English-language abstracts from these publishers. In addition to full Spanish-language content for many titles, this database includes summary content from the SABI English Language Abstracts series for 21 titles (eight of those titles are also presented in full in Spanish).
