The Morningstar Investment Research Center product provides access to stock market data and analysis, equity, and mutual funds information for research. The resource is a subscription database designed to service institutions, investors, and business students. In a 2010 review in The Charleston Advisor, John Schmitt called the product "a versatile investment tool that uses current data and in-depth analysis to put a value on stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, and broad markets . . . [with] analytic tools that a layman can use to understand risk and diversification."

Morningstar Investment Research Center is a database designed for libraries for research and analysis of financial information, conducting portfolio analysis, learning about investment options, and getting up to date financial news. According to Morningstar, the resource provides data on "approximately 14,500 stocks, 24,800 mutual funds, 1,500 exchange traded-finds, and 700 closed end funds". Additionally, the database provides analyst reports on over 3,500 securities with background and analyst opinions on top investments.

Morningstar Investment Research Center sorts financial information into the following categories: stock sectors, indexes, investment style, fund category, and industry. The interface provides several type of "screeners", or tabs, that enable exploration of the financial information. The tabs include: "Companies" with information from the New York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange, NASDAQ stocks, and stock analyst reports; "Funds" with financial information on mutual funds; "ETFs" with information on exchange-traded funds and up to date information on returns, reports and ratings; "Markets" information on investment indexes, types, sectors and styles; and "Portfolio," a suite of portfolio-planning tools and guidance.

Delivery:

Morningstar offers remote authentication by IP address or access by username and password.

Terms:

Subscription pricing of Morningstar Investment Research Center for academic libraries is based on FTEs. Libraries may contract for unlimited remote user access or for a limited number of users. Public libraries have the option of a single-user license or unlimited remote access.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Based on comments from several ARL Libraries, Morningstar has a transparent pricing model that is easy to understand.
