Overview

The Global Press Archive [1] is an initiative by East View Information Services in partnership with Stanford University Libraries and the Hoover Institution Library & Archives to digitize over 2,000 predominantly foreign-language newspaper titles ranging in coverage from the late 19th Century to present times.

Launched in 2016, the Global Press Archive features stand-alone titles and databases aggregating multiple titles from specific regions and time periods, and includes over 1,500 newspapers, 450,000 issues, and 4.7 million pages of content, with 17 countries and 12 languages represented. Most Global Press Alliance titles have been released on East View’s customized platform [2], with new releases continually being added to the program. Newspaper titles and aggregated archives are available for purchase through East View.

In 2018, the Center for Research Libraries and East View entered into a partnership — the Global Press Archive Charter Alliance [3] — to develop a special series of thematically designed collections to meet the priorities of CRL members, resulting in the creation of nine collections — totaling 4.5 million pages — over a period of three years. Thus far, the Alliance has published four open-access collections, including:

  • Late Qing and Republican-Era Chinese Newspapers [4]
  • Middle Eastern and North African Newspapers [5]
  • Independent and Revolutionary Mexican Newspapers [6]
  • Imperial Russian Newspapers [7]

Also forthcoming via the Charter Alliance are collections from Southeast Asia, Latin America, and East Africa.

Collection Content:

The Global Press Archive™ (GPA) is an initiative launched by East View Information Services in 2017 to index, digitize and consolidate global newspapers "to create the most comprehensive archival collection of digital news sources" (publisher's site [10]). The genesis of GPA was the agreement with Stanford University Libraries and the Hoover Institution Library & Archives to digitally preserve and make searchable "potentially 25 million pages of newspaper content" that are part of the collections at Stanford Libraries (Press Release 02 Nov 2016 [11]).

GPA initially launched with an aggregation of titles already available from East View, with the announcement of additional titles and aggregated collections to come beginning in 2018.

Delivery:

Titles will be made accessible through the customized "GPA Platform" based on the Veridian presentation platform. Veridian was developed specifically to support the presentation of newspaper content and has been employed by projects such as the California Digital Newspaper Collection and Singapore National Library. The platform is able to support discovery in a wide variety of languages and scripts.

Content purchased by institutions are accessible through IP Authentication and will be cross-discoverable within the platform. Some titles will be made available through partners on their respective platforms.

Terms:

GPA titles available for purchase are licensed through East View Information Services. Although the majority of titles are one-time purchases, some titles may include options for annual updates to content for an additional annual fee.Purchases are subject to ongoing maintenance fees.
