African American Communities

African American Communities provides access to primary source materials documenting race relations across social, political, cultural and religious perspectives in the United States from 1863-1986.  This collection focuses on Atlanta, Chicago, St Louis, Brooklyn, and towns and cities in North Carolina, and provides multiple views of the African American community through personal diaries and scrapbooks, pamphlets, newspapers and periodicals, correspondence, official records and in-depth oral histories.

American Indian Histories and Cultures

American Indian Histories and Cultures, scheduled for release in fall 2013, will present material from the Newberry Library’s Edward E. Ayer Collection, an extensive archival collection on American Indian history. The content ranges from early contacts with European settlers through the expanded occupation of the American west, up through the Indian political movements of the mid-20th century. The collection covers a wide geographic area with a primary focus on North America and Mexico. This digital resource will complement The American West, an earlier digital collection from Adam Matthew compiled from the Newberry Library’s Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana.

Classic Mexican Cinema

Classic Mexican Cinema  is a small, specialized digital collection of around 40,000 pages issued as one of the Brill Primary Sources collections. The five periodicals featured are from the Archives of the Filmoteca of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). In addition to periodicals the collection includes the personal scrapbook of filmmaker Fernando de Fuentes, as well as 50 rare lobby cards.

Engineering Case Studies Online

Engineering Case Studies Online focuses on engineering failures and employs the case study method for learning from the past. Materials included in cases can range from documentaries, accident reports, company reports, photographs and interviews. There are 58 cases that include significant supporting materials. Migration to New Worlds provides access to documents related to emigration to the United States, Canada and Australasia during the ‘century of immigration’ from 1800 to 1924.  Documents from the eighteenth century and some later material are also included.

This resource provides access to manuscript correspondence, diaries and travel journals, providing first-person accounts of the experiences of emigrants from various countries. Gale is working with the Smithsonian Institution to expand access to archival content on selected materials held at various Smithsonian repositories, including: the Smithsonian Libraries, Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Library, and the National Museum of American History's Archives Center and Library.
