    African American Newspapers, Series 2, 1835-1956 expands upon Readex's earlier series of African American newspapers. Series 2 will incorporate more than 60 titles published in 17 states, sourced from collections such as the American Antiquarian Society, Center for Research Libraries, the Library of Congress, and New York Public Library.

    African American Newspapers, Series 2, 1835-1956 expands upon Readex's earlier series of African American newspapers. Series 2 will incorporate more than 60 titles published in 17 states, sourced from collections such as the American Antiquarian Society, Center for Research Libraries, the Library of Congress, and New York Public Library.

    Key titles highlighted by the publisher include Frederick Douglass's New National Era (Washington, DC), Chicago Bee (Chicago, IL), The Louisianian (New Orleans, LA), The Pine and Palm (Boston, MA), National Anti-Slavery Standard (New York, NY), New York Age (New York, NY), Harlem Liberator (New York, NY), North Carolina Republican and Civil Rights Advocate (Weldon, NC), Southern News (Richmond, VA) and others.

     

    Delivery

    African American Newspapers, Series 2, 1835-1956 shares a common interface with Readex’s other news products (Early American Newspapers; 20th-Century American Newspapers; Ethnic American Newspapers, etc.) and may be configured to be cross-searchable with the earlier African American Newspapers series (if owned by the institution). The platform offers a variety of advanced search features, such as :

    • Searching one, all, or selected newspaper titles
    • Limiting by specific date ranges
    • Searching specific “article types” (News/Opinion, Legislative Acts or Legal Proceedings, Advertisements, Matrimony and Death Notices, etc.).
    • Narrowing by place of publication
    • Full-text search, or headline only

    In 2015, Readex launched a new interface for its news products to improve navigation and image magnification.

    Terms

    Online access is provided via one-time purchase through Readex/NewsBank, with an annual maintenance fee. Terms of use are governed by NewsBank's current standard license agreement. 

    Agreements negotiated with source institutions may vary in terms of rights to receive digital files and to provide access to the content following a period of exclusivity.
