Bloomberg Professional is an information network of real-time market data and historical information across industries, market sectors, and regions. The service also provides news, price quotes, and messaging through the platform. Bloomberg Professional services are available through the Bloomberg Terminal platform.

    Delivery

Data and content are available through dedicated Bloomberg terminals, but can be streamed to other devices such as flat screen display monitors.

    Terms

In 2016 the annual cost of a Bloomberg terminal for a commercial client was said to be approximately $24,000, although Bloomberg does not disclose its prices  Bloomberg also discounts its data products and services for universities, although there is no break for universities on the initial license. The educational package provides additional licenses for schools after at least one or two licenses are purchased, but the terminals "cannot be installed in private areas or for professional use, e.g. the investment/endowment or treasurer's offices."

    Strengths and Weaknesses

Several ARL institutions have reported that Bloomberg Professional has a very low download limit for each terminal. Furthermore, it is difficult to predict when a download limit will be reached at a given terminal and the error messages that appear when a download limit has been exceeded do not make the "error" cause explicit enough to sufficiently alert the user that the message indicates the download limitation has been reached. The terminals also require individual sign-ons and licenses restrict access to a small number of authorized users, requiring considerable mediation by libraries.
