Overview
The Economist Historical Archive provides access to issues of The Economist between 1843-2012 - from cover to cover. It includes news, analysis, commentary, editorials, statistics, demographics, letters to the editor, obituaries, and historical photographs.
This collection is updated annually (2012 content added in 2016, 2013 to be added in 2017, etc.).

Collection Content
The Economist Historical Archive provides full-text access to more than 8,000 issues (600,000 pages) of The Economist between 1843 and 2012. It includes news, analysis, commentary, editorials, statistics, demographics, letters to the editor, obituaries, and historical photographs.
Main features:
- This database includes the full-colour material scanned from print.
- Special reports on countries and industries
- Includes the regular sections, including science and technology, books reviews, and obituaries.
- Classified and display advertising profiling major companies are also included.
Annual Updates
Gale reports that from 2016, they will add a further year of content annually (i.e. the year 2012 added in 2016, the year 2013 in 2017, and so on).
Delivery
Content is available via Gale's Artemis platform. Features include the ability to browse by date; full-text and keyword search; and advanced searching to limit by dates, sections, and object (article) type. Results can be sorted and furhter limited, including a "search within results." Results may be viewed as clipped articles or in context of the full page.
Selected tables in the original publication may be exported as spreadsheets (particularly post-1983 "Key Indicators" tables).
The product is also available via Gale NewsVault, which enables cross-searchability with other Gale products.
As of September 2015, Portico was preserving The Economist Historical Archive content through 2008, with later content to be added periodically.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The Economist Historical Archive is notable for its content as well as functionality tailored specifically to the resource (with extensive metadata to enable advanced searching). Another significant benefit is the ability for users to download tables and export data as part of their research projects.
The Economist Historical Archive is a valuable accompaniment to other Gale products such as The Times Digital Archive and the Financial Times Historical Archive.
