    Illustrated London News Historical Archive, 1842-2003 provides access to more than 7,000 issues of the illustrated weekly newspaper.

    Founded by Herbert Ingram in 1842, it became the first fully illustrated weekly newspaper covering British and world events from 1842-2003.

    Illustrated London News Historical Archive, 1842-2003 provides access to approximately 260,000 pages of the more than 7,000 newspaper issues of the Illustrated London News.

    Founded by Herbert Ingram in 1842, the Illustrated London News became the first fully illustrated weekly newspaper covering British and world events from 1842-2003.

    The collection provides access to a wide range of subject areas in the 19th and 20th centuries, including:

    • The Arts: with reports and projects from prominent art figures such as opera singers, vaudeville stars, painters, and actors in theater productions and films.
    • Discovery and Exploration
    • Fashion: includes fashion columns and advertising pages
    • Industry and Trade: includes coverage of strikes, trade imports from the colonies, child labor, agriculture, living conditions of workers, and more.
    • Military History: includes coverage of the Boer Wars, American Civil War, Crimean War, World Wars I and II, and other wars or conflicts in the 19th and 20th centuries.
    • Politics
    • Science, Medicine, and Progress
    • Social History: includes reports on female suffrage, strikes, crime, emigration, religion, and more.
    • Sports
    • Transport: includes reports of transport including reports of the first omnibus, landmarks in motor car manufacture, Wright Brothers, and more.
    • Travel: provides access to global reports on people and places within the British Empire and throughout the world.

    The collection includes access to special edition reports, such as Napoleon's Visit to England (1855), the revolution in Portugal (1910) and the first photos from Mt. Everest (1933).

    Delivery

    This collection is available on the Gale News Vault platform and is cross-searchable with other newspaper and magazines on the platform. 

    It provides a basic search, personal user accounts for saved searches and results, bookmarking, emailing and printing options, and browse tools.

    Users are also provided with an advanced search of documents by keyword, article title, caption or contributor pinpoints.  Refine searches by publication date, article type, illustration type or special issues are also available.
