The Japan Times Digital Archive covers the complete run (1897–2016) of the English-language daily published in Tokyo. The archive contains a reported 490,000 pages of content, from 30,000 issues published over the 117-year history of the newspaper. Japan Times began publication on March 22, 1897, aimed initially at the English-speaking audience living in Japan to provide useful and "reliable" information on the affairs of Japan and abroad, but also in hopes of inspiring greater understanding of the people, culture, and the political and economic transformations occurring in Japan at the time. The paper maintained editorial independence for much of its history (although it was used as a propaganda tool for Imperial Japan during World War II). The paper went through occasional title changes (all represented in the product) as a result of title mergers, including:

    • The Japan Times (22 Mar 1897–1 Jan 1918)
    • The Japan Times & Mail (2 Apr 1918–10 Nov 1940)
    • The Japan Times & Advertiser / Japan Times Advertiser (11 Nov 1940–31 Dec 1942)
    • Nippon Times (1 Jan 1943–30 Jun 1956)
    • The Japan Times (1 Jul 1956–present)
    Delivery

The Japan Times Digital Archive was first launched by the news publisher in 2013, and has been distributed by Kinokuniya Company Ltd. in Japan and to academic libraries abroad. In June 2015, East View Information Services signed an agreement to sell the paper's digital archives via the publisher's platform.
