Mergent Online is the flagship project of Mergent, Inc., a major company information publisher.
Mergent Online is a web-based database for business related research. The data covers: financial information on approximately 25,000 active and inactive U.S. companies; global market and international company data; approximately 300,000 annual reports from globally listed companies with archived reports for over 10 years; and approximately 150,000 profiles on current and former executives from all U.S. publicly traded companies, updated daily.
Mergent produces its own content, including research reports, and licenses private company information from the Dunn & Bradstreet Corporation, and obtains financial statements from SEC filings.
Mergent Online is a modular product, basic subscription comes with access to U.S. Company Data and/or International Company Data. Subscribers can also choose from an additional 12 modules (14 in total):
The company data includes business descriptions, lists of key executives and directors with biography and compensation, current news, lists of all subsidiaries, long-term debt data, stocks including historical capital changes, the number of common shares outstanding, list of competitors, consensus earnings estimate, a list of insides' holdings and transactions, a corporate family tree, profitability and liquidity ratios, over 300,000 annual reports from U.S. and non-U.S. companies archived over 10 years, and company financials with standard XBRL taxonomies, including preliminary and restated, for more than 15 years with an option to convert the figures into another currency other than U.S. dollars
The database can be accessed via user ID and password authentication or IP authentication.
Mergent Online has search forms that allow users to choose one or more company databases (or modules) to search across. The platform provides discovery of content via Basic Search, Advanced Search, Executive Search, Government Filings, and Industry Analysis.
Company reports can be exported into formats compliant with multiple software applications, including: Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, and Acrobat Reader.
Subscription pricing for Mergent Online is based on FTE, the contract is negotiable. Premium modules are available at additional cost. In the event of a contract cancelation, there is no access to any archival data.
Based on testaments given by ARL institutions, Mergent products often only provide downloading of database content into PDF format, which can be limiting in terms of its usability for academic research. Additionally, the PDFs from Mergent products are often poor quality and not OCR'd.
