    Overview

Launched in 2018 by East View Information Services and the Center for Research Libraries, Phase 1 of the Global Press Archive CRL Alliance developed a series of thematically designed newspaper collections to meet the priorities of CRL members. Phase 1 of the CRL Alliance will features hundreds of titles across nine thematic collections (six of which are completely open-access totaling 4.5 million pages of content.

To build on this groundbreaking academic-commercial partnership, planning for Phase 2 of the Global Press Archive CRL Alliance is underway. Like the previous iteration of the Alliance, Phase 2 highlights the same commitment to open-access and contemporary content, enabling new research in areas previously bounded, and increasing diverse perspectives while providing the broadest accessibility possible to rare, vernacular-language newspaper content from around the world. Content for Phase 2 will be identified by CRL and contributing institutions, and prioritized by an advisory group and multiple selection teams with vast subject expertise drawn from across the CRL membership. Phase 2 will culminate in the creation of six new collections — four open-access and two CRL-wide — totaling up to 3 million pages over two years. Phase 2 also includes:

    • Hosting of files on East View's Global Press Archive platform, featuring full image and text content interoperable among all open-access and commercially delivered content.
    • Support for innovative use of digitized content on request.
    • Discounts on non-Alliance Global Press Archive resources, as well as favorable pricing on custom digitization projects for members.

    Collection Content

The Global Press Archive is the result of an initiative between Stanford University Libraries and the Hoover Institution Library & Archives to digitally preserve and make more accessible thousands of original print newspaper publications collected by the Hoover Institution and now housed at Stanford Libraries. Encompassing newspapers in more than thirty languages, the Global Press Archive will ultimately include thousands of titles across the globe, presented in full-image and full-text format, optimized for scholarly use.

In 2019, the Center for Research Libraries and East View entered into a partnership — the Global Press Archive Charter Alliance — to develop a special series of thematically designed collections to meet the priorities of CRL members. An important and ambitious undertaking, the Charter Alliance makes available a substantial collection of digital international newspapers, with a series of open-access initiatives for out-of-copyright and orphaned newspaper content, and CRL-wide access to selected in-copyright global newspapers prioritized by the community and negotiated by East View.

    Delivery

Titles will be made accessible through the Global Press Archive platform based on Veridian. Veridian was developed specifically to support the presentation of newspaper content and has been employed by projects such as the California Digital Newspaper Collection and the Singapore National Library. Veridian features full image and text content produced according to National Digital Newspaper Program Standards, which is interoperable among all open-access and commercially delivered content. Content purchased by institutions will be accessible through IP authentication and will be cross-discoverable within the platform.
