    Overview

    The China Data Center is a unit of the University of Michigan that was founded in 1997. The China Data Center is designed to serve as an international center for advancing the study and understanding of China. A primary goal of the Center is the integration of historical, social and natural science data in a geographic information system.

    The China Data Center is supported by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), the Institute of Social Research (ISR), and the  the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Sciences (ICPSR).

    The China Data Center missions are: to support research in the human and natural components of local, regional and global change; to promote quantitative research on China; to promote collaborative research in spatial studies; and to promote the use and sharing of China data in teaching and research. The center has partnerships with several Chinese government agencies and companies in distributing China statistical data and publications. The Center brings together data through cooperative endeavors with China, with other universities, and institutions around the world. The Center has mechanisms in place for a decentralized effort to standardize, document, integrate, and share data about China with other institutions.

    Open Data

    A portion of the Center's data is free and open online, it is organized into a series of categories, and is keyword searchable. 

    Open data falls into one of the following categories:

    There are a small subset of free and open maps online as well, including:

    •   China Atlas of the 3rd Industrial Census
    •   China Atlas of 2000 Population Census
    •   China Atlas of Population and Environment (1990-1999)
    •   China Atlas of Population and Environment (2000)

    Paid for Products & Services 

    The rest of the China Data Center is available to users through purchase. The Center's featured products are: the China Statistical Databases; China Census Databases; and China Spatial Data Service (China Geo-Explorer). Datasets of statistical and geospatial data can also be purchased individually. 

    Terms

    Authorized Users of China Data Center are not permitted to: 

    • Engage in systematic copying, downloading, or printing of licensed content or use manual or automated software, devices or other processes (including, but not limited to, web-crawlers and spiders) within licensed content. 
    • Transmit licensed content to any unauthorized user or use the licensed content for commercial purposes.
    • Modify or create a derivative work of licensed content or remove, obscure, or modify any copyright or other notices included in the licensed content.
    • Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise alter, frame, or simulate the appearance of licensed content.
