    Overview

The Medical Heritage Library is a freely available collection of resources, including text, audio, and video. The project seeks out new opportunities to digitize primary resources in the history of medicine through grant-funded initiatives and efforts to identify like-minded institutions willing to share content through the MHL’s Internet Archive collection.

Content Contributors contribute existing digitized content generated by their own institutions that meets MHL criteria and deposit it the Internet Archive tagged as part of the MHL collection.

The Medical Heritage Library has a collection of digitized medical rare books, pamphlets, journals, and films, with representative works from each of the past six centuries. The collections are all available through the Internet Archive.

The MHL facilitates access to digitized versions of approximately 3,000 volumes (over 1.7 million pages) of historical medical journals, primarily dating from 1797-1923. These volumes comprise 336 journal titles and are all accessible on the MHL website. Addtionally, the State Medical Journals Collection contains 97 state medical journals, dating from 1900-2000, comprising over 2,700,000 pages in over 3,800 volumes.

The final major component of the MHL's collection is the UK Medical Heritage Library collection which brings together books and pamphlets from 10 research libraries in the UK, focused on the 19th and early 20th century history of medicine and related disciplines.  The UK Medical Heritage Library is a sub-set of the Medical Heritage Library.
