It includes fifty-four volumes from the 18th and 19th centuries with works by Cadwallader Colden, William Apes, Samuel G. Drake, and Benjamin Drake, as well as autobiographies by Black Hawk, Okah Tubbee, Kah-Ga-Gah-Bowh, and many others. Nations covered in depth, include the Eskimos and Inuit of the Arctic; the sub-Arctic Cree; the Pacific Coastal Salish; the Ojibwa, Cheyenne, and Sioux of the Plains; the Luiseno, Pomo, and Miwok of California; the Apache, Navajo, and Hopi of the Southwest; the Creek and Cherokee of the Southeast; the Peqout, Iroquois, and Seneca of the Northeast; the Metis and Nez Perce of the Great Plateau; and others.

The interface includes Alexander Street Press' Conductor software, which enables "high functionality searching of texts, reference works, websites and other digital artifacts in the Humanities."
North American Indian Thought and Culture is available on the Web, either through one-time purchase of perpetual rights or through annual subscription. A library that purchases perpetual rights will also receive an archival copy of the data. CRL is only providing an offer for the one-time purchase of perpetual rights.
The strengths of this database is that it provides multiple search capabilities, from a quick search to advanced search of individuals, documents, works, and peoples. Each advanced search index provides extensive fields from which to search with from the title, race, occupation, year written, historical events discussed, work type, corporate author, publisher, editor or translator, and so forth.
In addition, a table of contents and guides are made available to help users navigate through the database. The guides provide a series of questions to give users ideas for how to search through the database.
